Every year I till my little plot of dirt (600sq ft) and get ready to start planting.
I plant some seeds directly into the ground (beets, kale, chard) and others I start in my sun room (tomatoes, broccoli, squash).
Every year there comes a moment as I am watering what looks like bare dirt that I think to myself “who am I kidding? Is anything actually happening?”
Yet I continue to water, and wait. And a few days later, every year, the little sprouts begin to pop through the soil.
This is about as close as my skeptical (read: big difference between cynical and skeptical, never forget that) little brain can get to true faith.
In some ways gardening is my religion. Showing up every year and trusting that the sun will warm the earth, the water will fatten my little seeds, those seeds will become tiny plants, those tiny plants will grow and become food to nourish the body, I will save seeds from that food, and start again.
There really is something almost magical about the whole process.

My yoga delinquency

I used to be utterly devoted to my yoga mat. I practiced daily, sometimes multiple times a day. I taught classes six days a week. I totally “drank the yoga kool aid”. Then something happened….I rescued a bunch of dogs. Now if I was going to do something physical I may as well involve them. Kill two birds, ya know.
Now I am rarely, if ever on my mat.
I thought about it a lot this weekend. I missed the strength in my shoulders, the calm in my mind. I resolved myself that my mat and I reunite once more.
So this morning, took a deep breath, and bent into my first forward bend in some time. While my strength and flexibility are not as potent as they had been the movements were still in me. The “flow” came quite naturally. That is until my beloved canine best friend Ruby wanted to see something on the other side of the room as I descended into chaturanga of my second sun salutation ‘b’. She plowed right underneath me and square into my nose. Instead of achieving enlightenment, I saw stars.
One day I may have that serene space designated solely for my yoga practice. But until then, I may just have to accept that in this house, yoga is a full contact sport.

Born in Africa to French wildlife photographer parents, Tippi Degré had a most unusual childhood. The young girl grew up in the African desert and developed an uncommon bond with many untamed animals including a 28-year old African elephant named Abu, a leopard nicknamed J&B, lion cubs, giraffes, an Ostrich, a mongoose, crocodiles, a baby zebra, a cheetah, giant bullfrogs, and even a snake. Africa was her home for many years and Tippi became friends with the ferocious animals and tribespeople of Namibia. As a young child, the French girl said, “I don’t have friends here. Because I never see children. So the animals are my friends.”
